We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer with a strong backend focus to join a growing technology company developing software solutions for local governments and municipalities.
The company builds a SaaS platform that helps public-sector organizations streamline operations, including facility and park reservations, scheduling, permits, payments, and accounting.
You'll join a lean, two-person engineering team at an important stage of the company's growth, working on two major initiatives:
- Modernizing and refactoring an established production platform.
- Designing and building a new platform from 0 → 1.
This is a highly hands-on role for an engineer who enjoys solving complex backend challenges, making architectural decisions, and taking ownership of products from design to production.
What You'll Do
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using TypeScript, Node.js, and Express.
- Build and evolve systems supporting reservations, availability, scheduling, and resource management.
- Refactor and modernize an existing production codebase, improving maintainability, reliability, and performance.
- Design and implement new products and features from 0 → 1, contributing to technical architecture and product decisions.
- Develop workflows involving payments, refunds, cancellations, pricing, and accounting.
- Build and maintain APIs, database schemas, and integrations across the platform.
- Contribute to frontend development using React and Next.js when needed, while maintaining a primary focus on backend engineering.
- Identify and resolve complex business logic challenges, including reservation conflicts, availability rules, and financial transactions.
- Collaborate directly with a small engineering team, taking ownership of technical decisions and end-to-end delivery.
- Help establish scalable engineering practices as the platform and team grow.
What We're Looking For
Must-Have Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally with a strong backend focus.
- Strong proficiency in TypeScript and JavaScript.
- Hands-on production experience with Node.js and Express.
- Professional experience with React and Next.js.
- Strong understanding of relational databases, SQL, and data modeling.
- Experience designing, developing, and maintaining REST APIs and backend integrations.
- Experience working with both established production codebases (legacy modernization/refactoring) and greenfield projects (0 → 1 development).
- Strong understanding of software architecture, system design, and engineering best practices.
- Ability to independently investigate problems, evaluate technical trade-offs, and deliver production-ready solutions.
- Comfortable working in a small engineering team with a high degree of autonomy and ownership.
Nice to Have
- Experience building reservation, booking, or scheduling systems.
- Experience with payment processing, refunds, accounting, or financial workflows.
- Understanding of complex business rules involving availability, pricing, cancellations, and resource allocation.
- Experience developing software for government organizations, municipalities, or the public sector (GovTech).
- Experience modernizing large or complex legacy applications.
- Background working in early-stage startups or small engineering teams.
- Experience designing systems where data consistency, financial accuracy, and reliability are critical.
What Makes This Role Interesting?
Two major engineering challenges: You'll have the opportunity to modernize an established platform while simultaneously building a new product from scratch.
High ownership and technical influence: With a small engineering team, your contributions will directly influence architecture, engineering practices, and product development.
Complex backend challenges: Reservation systems involve much more than simple CRUD operations. You'll work with availability calculations, scheduling conflicts, pricing rules, cancellations, payments, and financial correctness.
Real-world impact: Your work will help municipalities and local governments operate more efficiently and deliver better public services.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for a backend-leaning Senior Software Engineer who combines strong technical execution with architectural thinking and product ownership.
The ideal candidate is comfortable navigating complex, established systems while also enjoying the challenge of building new products from the ground up.
You should be someone who can understand business problems, design practical solutions, make sound technical decisions, and take features all the way to production, without requiring constant direction.
If you enjoy untangling complex systems just as much as building new ones, this opportunity could be a great fit.
